PART 1 | Chapter 3 | Your Brain is Out to Get You
(But don't worry - we've got this)
So as you’ve probably guessed by now, I’m not going to sugarcoat things for you! That never really does anyone any favours, right..?
So let’s be frank.
Personal growth is one of the most challenging, overwhelming, constantly stressful things you can do. Even if you don’t FEEL stressed, the very nature of the growth journey means you’re dealing with change all the time.
And that, to our human brains, is immensely stressful. We just aren’t designed for constant challenge. Some of us thrive on it, though; many of us feel we have a point to prove or a mission to accomplish - but I’ve watched many potentially brilliant, ambitious people stop themselves in their tracks through self-sabotaging and stifling behaviours.
By not trusting themselves and their intuition.
By not seeing, believing and allowing their own brilliance.
By getting sucked in by self-doubt, self-criticism and fear.
By mistakenly believing that others out there are more ‘cut out for this’, more qualified or somehow better than them.
I’ve watched them tie themselves up in knots of procrastination, lie awake at night worrying about what the next ‘right move’ is - and stressing about problems that don’t yet exist.
Constantly seeking reassurance - and getting none.
Still doubting themselves, even when they are making it work and there’s money coming in!
Giving away their power to everyone and everything that crosses their path.
And all too often, driving their dreams and chances of fulfilment down the pan through fear, uncertainty and inaction.
When my clients come to me, typically they’ve spent far too much time and money chasing the silver bullet strategy or nugget of advice that’s going to change their world - only to find that (once again) they didn’t learn anything they didn’t know already.
They’ve often been struggling to put themselves out there and really go all-in through fear of what other people might think - even to the point where they’ve sabotaged careers and lost successful businesses as a result.
And they’ve got so caught up in all the ‘should’s - everyone else’s shoulds that they’ve assumed they have to carry - that they’ve ended up working ridiculous hours, staying up all night, and getting very little of any real value done - all the while suffering with their health and sacrificing their relationships and personal life for a much lower return than they had hoped.
And all in the name of a path that’s supposed to bring them freedom.
All in the name of a path that’s supposed to give them the time to enjoy life.
All in the name of hitting goals they’ve set for themselves which have continued to feel so far out of reach for so long…
